I was fascinated by Trop’s choice of fictional detective because, in the course of researching women scientists, I had encountered the real woman on whom she is based: usually known only as Mary (or Maria or Miriam) the Jewess, she lived in Alexandria during its Roman occupation (Hellenistic period), was one of the first alchemists whose name has survived, and is credited with inventing several pieces of apparatus that alchemists continued to use for hundreds of years in the proto-chemistry (as opposed to spiritual) aspect of their studies. Trop calls her Miriam bat Isaac. I was very curious to see how she would be developed as a character.Trop was very, very good at setting the scene for the story (the first in a series). I learned a tremendous amount about what people in Alexandria at the time, especially upper-middle-class Jews, wore, ate, saw in the streets in different parts of the city and at different times of day, etc. etc. Unfortunately, this excellent power of research and presentation essentially overwhelmed both characters and plot. By halfway through the book, I had learned a moderate amount about Miriam’s interests and feelings, but nothing that made her stand out from other independent-minded story heroines; and, although one dismaying event had occurred, there had been no murder, and the mystery had not become compelling. I gave up at that point: scene-setting is great, but an author needs to get on with the story too.

I love great historical fiction, and June Trop really hits the mark with THE DEADLIEST LIE. With excellent historical accuracy, she weaves a tale that is part mystery--a search for hidden scrolls--all while painting fantastic characters who are living in what I believe is the most interesting time period. Ancient Rome. Miriam is believable, flawed, and driven. An excellent combo. Pick up this book.
I was transported back to 46 CE Alexandria! Reading “The Deadliest Lie” was the next best thing to being there. As an ancient history buff with a passion for Egyptian archeology I devoured the descriptions written by June Trop. The reader is not only treated with a mystery, but also the smells, sights, tastes and overall feeling of ancient Egypt. I could almost taste the sesame cakes, feel Miriam’s himitation, and smell the interior of the litter for hire. The bonus is that Miriam is based on a real historical figure, Marie Hebrea, a celebrated alchemist. I eagerly look forward to Ms. Trop’s next book.
Excellent summer reading. I enjoyed the characters who came alive and the fascinating background of ancient Alexandria. It was hard to put down. I look forward to reading other books in the series.
Ms. Trop skillfully weaves an exciting story within an accurate historical framework. This intriguing mystery gripped me from the first page, and I was immediately transported back to 46 CE Alexandria. Ms. Trop injects the reader precisely into that time and space with her convincing descriptions of life in and around that city as it existed nearly 2000 years ago...the thoroughfares and markets teeming with the populace, the Lighthouse, the Library, the Jewish community, the clothing, the food of the time, the home of Miriam Bat Isaac. The protagonist, Miriam, is based on an actual woman whose achievements are so remarkable that they continue to be noteworthy today. The character development is convincing and I experienced Miriam's pain as she struggles to find the stolen scrolls and to overcome the obstacles that preclude her from living the life she dreams to live; I celebrated with Miriam as she crosses the threshold from girlhood to womanhood. In "The Author's Notes" Ms. Trope illustrates her brilliant writing style outside the format of the novel and tells the reader how she wrote this fascinating book.
I highly recommend, "The Deadliest Lie" to anyone who is interested in reading a great book. I eagerly look forward to the publication of its sequel, "The Deadliest Hate".

June Trop, has written a remarkable first historical novel, The Deadliest Lie, which takes place in the first century CE in Alexandria. Miriam bat Isaac is a young budding alchemist who had possession of the Alchemist League's scrolls containing valuable formulas, At some point during the family's Shabbat (Jewish Sabbath) celebration these scrolls were stolen. This mystery leads Miriam on a determined course to seek the return of the scrolls and find the thief. In her quest she needs to include her own father, brother, and fiance as possible suspects. With help from others she must travel to various parts of Alexandria which are dangerous and could possibly even cause her own death.
What is remarkable about the novel is the amount of historic research that Ms. Trop obviously spent in making the reader actually feel a part of this period of time as well as learning about the treatment of Jews. The author cites her research at the end of the novel along with a glossary of terms that might be unfamiliar to some. As we read the novel we were routing for Miriam and hoping that she would be safe as well as finding the thief.
Miriam is based on a true person, Maria Hebrea, the legendary founder of Western alchemy, who developed the concepts and apparatus alchemists and chemists would use for 1500 years.
Anyone interested in this period of history, chemists, and mystery fans will enjoy this first work of Ms.Trop. We look forward to the sequel which she is working on presently.
