Title American at War

These two volumes on the American military in World War II provide insight to what the average soldier, sailor and airman experienced from their joining up through training and on the way to join battle with the enemy on air, land, or sea. Seems that a large number of paratroopers were interviewed, by the cross section ranges from medics to tankers and administrative personnel to staff officers.
After reading about the troop crossings, I found the description of the troops ships used quite enlightening. I recommend the See the Inside section on and trying the Surprise Me a few times where samples of some of the interesting material included in the book can be read. Both books are laid out the same and you can open to most any part of the book and find it will be similar to what you see on these samples. I am surprised I have not seen this book i local bookstores yet with some of the more popular literature on the war.
I recently purchased this book. A good investment for a book about Americans at war presenting a variety of stories from those that served intwined with background material to aid the reader in obtaining an understanding of the swirl of events engulfing these men.

The stories of men being called up or volunteering take you on many paths through various types of training through the perilous voyage across the Atlantic by sea or air. All this takes the reader into a period of preparation for the big invasion of Normandy. Not all the participants in this book wind up in England. Instead we follow the experiences of some who take part in the invasion of North Africa and later work their way up the Italian boot.

This book reminds me of some other books that include veterans stories. Those other books often are not wrapped into a larger account and instead have individual chapters for each veteran and make it rather difficult to follow the big picture. Here we find everyone tied to and a part of the larger story that we can follow, but we also are invited into their activities during training in America and England with other aspects of military service often overlooked or simply not even mentioned in other books. An enteraining adventure book which many will enjoy. For some it will also help tell the story of what grand daddy did in the big war.

The book also is well illustrated with photos and maps and comes at a good price for such a large book. The gritty looking cover photo serves to inform you that what is inside is the real story of real men. Quite an enjoyable ride!

The second volume appeared months ago and now finally the first volume is available. This connects the dots giving more details on those covered in the other volume who participated in the invasion of Normandy. The reader is taken back to the time when most of these men entered military service and then began their training. Their training varied relative to their year of entry in service. Some of the veterans describe their induction and training in various parts of the US and how they were assigned to various branches. On man finds himself arriving on a train at quartermaster post and then the next thing he knows he is with a group that are randomly assigned to graves registration. Another veteran described how he struggled to aovid physical exams through OCS and active service because he was missing a lung. Without taking those physicals it seems no one ever knew except those that helped him get by the first physical.
A variety of activities describe range from Louisiana maneuvers to amphibious training and from glider pilots training to that of naval personnel in beach battalions. While these activities in the US are taking place, the landings in North Africa and later Italy are not forgotten by the authors. Descriptions of those operations and the air war in Europe are included. The reader follows many of the troops as they cross the Atlantic on troops ships or ferrying aircraft. One veteran describes his troopship for the 101st Airborne Division and what happened when it breaks down leaving them stranded in Newfoundland for many days. Others detail the misery of lief on a troopship while others make a shorter and sometimes more harrowing trip flying across the Atlantic with stops at places like Greeland, Iceland or Brazil and West Africa. Not every event can be covered, but a sufficent sampling from veterans and background material from the authors provides a rather complete story of what was underway. Not only experiences of those with infantry, airborne and armored divisions are covered, but also more specialized units like antiaircraft battalions, engineer special brigades designed for the invasion along with naval beach battalions, amphibious tank companies and glider troops. Of the latter, many of the glider troops found themselves assigned to those units without volunteering and seldom ever saw or flew in a glider until they reached England.
Some of the more interesting accounts in this and the second volume are those of Major David Thomas (82nd Airborne Division), PFC Ray Hood (a rebellious teenager with the 101st Airborne Division), Sgt Walter Condon (121 Engineer Battalion, 29th Division), Sgt. John Slaughter (29th Division), Larry Knect (an old timer with the 4th Division), Marcel Swank (a ranger taking part in the Dieppe raid), Ranger Lt James Eikner, Harper Coleman (4thDivision), Sgt Bill Lewis (29th Division), Alvin Anderson (B-17 crew member), Melvin Larson (another B-17 crew member who moves from gunner to bomb dropper), Lt Carl Strom (36th Divisionin the disastrous crossing of the Rapido during the Battle of Casino) and a number of other fascinating people too numerous to name here.
This book has what many others are missing - how they got there! This book certainly makes Volume 2 a must to have and vice versa.
