After really liking The Nightingale and Winter Garden by this author, I wanted to try another. This one is so completely different and reads more like a young adult novel with teenage love, tragedy, a mother's love, etc, etc. It just wasn't my style and was predictable melodrama. I was disappointed since I had liked those other two so much. I may still try another by this author after carefully reading reviews.

Kristen Hannah writes a great story. It was deeper than I imagined it would be from the beginning of the book. A real exploration of emotions in the face of tragedy. There was one part of the story that I found particularly difficult to believe, but the remainder of the novel rang true enough to feel realistic and evoke sincere emotion from the reader. I would recommend the book as a good read.
Pros There are many life problems were pointed out to be thought and re-though again and again. Such as Love, Forgiveness, Madness, Motherhood, but most of all if the price to be honest in our criminal justice system is worth paying, and, if not, then what is the price to be dishonest? It is written in such convincing way that you feel that everyone can get into the catch of circumstances where mistakes are inevitable. The book written so well that (look at some negative reviews!) people easily assume that this is not a fiction, but real story. There was a lot of good thinking is happening (while crying) while you read the book; definitely a very good read.
Cons two actually. One is that the world Ms. Hannah created is way too (unnecessarily) dark and realistic, so I was crying (and I am not that emotional) most of the reading. It feels that it was not necessary to spend so much attention and describe in such details the suffering of different characters. Sometimes you even forget what is causing all that suffering, so much of it is spilled on you. This is a serious problem, which prevents me to recommend the book to many of my friends. The second part is political. Ms. Hannah is so convinced her ideology is the true engine behind all human events and emotions, that the settings become predictable and much of a plot becomes shallow. Again, this makes reading the book harder, as you realize that besides very good ideas and beautifully and well described setting, most of the plot is improbable and can not be driven or caused by such simple logic...
Love the writing style of this author. I didn't want to stop reading and read to the early morning hours. You just felt for each of the characters as you could relate to each one. It's a tragic story but so common I have to think in this day and age of under age drinking and driving. The mother in this story, Jude, was a helicopter mom but I know a very loving mother but I could see how her children never wanted to disappoint her. But she was also an irritating parent who wanted to control just too much. How her children did not rebel more in this book is amazing. That she lost her only daughter, a twin to her son, was so tragic that affected her to the bone as any parent would feel the loss just as deep. It did take her a while to finally come back to her family, I mean six years of feeling nothing for her other family members and her first granddaughter, the child of her son and Lexi the teenager who was driving the awful night the daughter Mia was killed. I did love Lexi and her strong personality in how she stood up to Jude to make her feelings known and give Jude a reality check. But one thing I found out of unbelievable was the vocabulary of the granddaughter, Grace, at five years old seemed a bit too much for a child her age and more in line to a child of 8-10 I would think. It just didn't fit for a five year old. Other than that very good story.
I'm a fan of Kristin Hannah and have read many of her books - loved every one. While this is an earlier book and it's not one of her best, the story is gripping and well told and I got totally caught up in it. I basically couldn't put it down - loved the characters, especially the main character, Lexi. She is so young and so determined to do the right thing. And the emotional complexity of the situations she finds herself in, the decisions she makes and the unintended consequences makes the story a rich read.
Love, loss, family, friendship, redemption. All of these play a part in this beautifully by written novel. Jude is called a helicopter mother because of her fierce love for her children and being overly protective of her children, Zach and Mia. Her home is where her children's friends gathered and hung out. Zach and Mia are twins and inseparable. On the first day of high school, Zach meets the love of his life and Mia meets her bff-Lexi. Zach moves the in-crowd, with his good looks and easy laugh. Mia and Lexi lean on each other. Over the years, Lexi has become a fixture at the Farraday home and a part of the family. Jude is the mother Lexi never had. Zach and Lexi keep their feelings for each other hidden until their senior year in high school. Their senior year is a blur of activities and parties. As graduation approaches, Zach and Mia are head in to USC; Lexi, to the local community college. The three vow to always remain friends and create a testament to that bond. Tragedy strikes. Will the bonds of love, family, and friendship tray and break? Or will they become stronger and purer, as the flames of the tragedy burns them.
I’ve read the nightingale, night road and the great alone so far and I’ve absolutely loved every one. Kristin Hannah sure knows how to tug at the heart strings and tell a great story. I loved this as much as the other two if not more ; I went and bought Pretty much all of her other books and I’m going to read each one .... this tale is about Lexi whose drunken night of teenage fun spirals into a horror story - told from 3rd person it shows how each person grieves for that night and I don’t want to spoil alert but Jude ( Mia’s mother (lexis BFF) ) she is very accurately portrayed as far as her anger and grief. When I was young a similar situation happened to my BFFs family and it does destroy the soul. Jude’s anger really comes out and is pretty much how my BFFs mother was for years .. realistic .. what a great book
