Cosidering that I didn't think I could ever stand the male in this sequel, Enoch has a wonderful way of turning the tables and developing sympathetic and understandable characters that are believable. If the ending wasn't so abrupt, I would have given it 5 stars.

This was a big disappointment to someone who has many Suzanne Enoch books in her "keeper" collection. The heroine AND the hero are both hard to like. Nothing in this story rings true except the male friendships (this is one of Enoch's big fortes the men in her books have believable conversations and good relationships that one enjoys reading about and which add to the insight into their characters.) The relationship between the hero and heroine didn't work and wasn't believable (a woman shoots you in the back and you practically just shrug it off?? and hardly talk about it again???) In addition, the villain was just not convincing and felt like a cardbooard figure/device put there to move the plot forward but with no depth at all. There was so much description of the clubs that it felt like the author was simply including them to be able to write off a research trip. Seriously, unless you are vastly interested in the number of tables and the best layout to run a club, this was WAY too much information! I really tried to get into this story, but 3/4ths of the way through I ended up just putting the book down and forgetting about the characters instantly; I was not in any way tempted to pick it up again. If you don't know this author, I recommend starting with almost any other of her books and giving this one a miss. If you're already an Enoch fan, avoid this one! I'm hopeful that the next ones will be up to her usual standard!
This is a good read...and here comes the "But"....but I never got to like the characters of Diane and Oliver. Somehow I just have to like the hero and heroine in order to enjoy the book. Oliver, a gambler and rake, seemed way too willing to be pushed around by Diane and Diane was a ridged, bitter woman who never seemed to cut him some slack. The story has merit and does set up the characters for the second and third book. Ms Enoch is an accomplished author in this genre and her writing style, and characterization is to be commended.
I have no idea who named this book, but clearly that person never actually read the book. The heroine is a widow, and really quite familiar with rakes at this point in her life. So, please just ignore it altogether. Maybe it will make sense in the context of the coming series, but certainly not at this point.

The hero and heroine are both sharp and a little angry. He softens before she does, and spends much of the book essentially wooing her in his own way. Diane is working very hard to be her own woman in a world that doesn't really allow for it, so she's a bit tougher than your usual heroine, and she's a bit more bitter. We know the h/h have met before, but we don't get much insight into it in the beginning. As the past starts to be revealed, the hurt and anger Diane feels towards Oliver becomes clearer, and you understand why he has to make amends. I bought their HEA big time because they really seemed to work together.

All in all, it's a great beginning to a series, and I really can't wait to read Jenny's story (if it's ever told).
Ok, I did get very frustrated with the hero at first, but I enjoyed this book. Diane is a heroine I liked unlike some of the other reviewers, I was impressed by her scratching her way to make the gentlemans club work and make her living instead of just going after another husband. It took a while for Oliver to get that she was so important to him but that is to be expected. Suzanne Enoch is one of those terrific authors that grabs your attention from page one. You care about these people, you really want to know their story. That is the bottom line to a winning novel and she does not dissappoint.
I like Enochs' books, not because they are realistic for time period, but because they involve me in such a manner that most of the times is close to impossible to stop reading the book.
I can forever praise the author, but this book is far from being her best.
The hero had such promise.
In a flashback we discover that the hero (Oliver) was marquis heir brought low by his own inducement and pride who then had to flee London. In Vienna he met a lovely widow (Diane), with whom he had a 2 weeks affair.
Fast-forward to the "present day" and we find a Marquis who for no apparent reason hates his former lover, the sentiment, I might add, is shared by the said lover (Diane).
One of my greatest pet peeves is an idiotic reason for the separation of the H/h.
I can readily accept that a rake had an affair got kind of scared and scrammed. Maybe out of the continent is a little extreme, but nonetheless it's an action quite plausible. However, what I can't believe is the anger created by such action, yes, Diane was hurt, yes, she holds a grudge, but for such a long time?
She more readily forgave her late husband who left her destitute then a former lover that spent only two weeks with her. What did she expect from the affair? Marriage?? Eternal love?
She annoyed me to no end. She blackmailed, shot, cajoled and made the hero's life miserable for the simple fact he acted in the past as was expect of everyone, but her. She takes exception to everything he does, and he still loves her enough not only to endure such treatment, but also to apologize for his misgivings and help her out.
I understand she suffered, but to turn in this jaded women so quickly and to bad mouth him for such a long time, only to backtrack just 2 months after reuniting with him is, at minimum, perplexing.
And, lastly, I honestly didn't mind the general description of the club or its menial workings, it gave more credit to a plot that from middle to end was fraying bit by bit, and getting on my nerves.
In short, I liked the hero, but found the heroine lacking. The plot was different enough to hold my attention, but not good enough to compensate for the heroine.
